Goddesses in roman mythology

Roman mythology, rich in deities and playing an important role in religious rituals, festivities, and beliefs related to life and nature. Goddess is a selection of three goddesses and their unique attributes:

  • Tellus (or Terra): the goddess of Earth and fertility, depicted here in vibrant colors and surrounded by abundant flora and fauna. The Romans worshipped her to ensure the fertility of the land and the success of their harvests.
  • Salacie: the marine goddess associated with saltwater, often revered by fishermen and sailors, and linked to Neptune, the God of the sea. She was seen as the one who ruled over the calm, peaceful waters of the sea.
  • Cybele: the eastern goddess adopted by the Romans, embodies the wild, vegetal power of nature. Various birds and tropical plants live in harmony around her.

Beneficial connection between grapes & goddesses

Wine held an important place in Roman mythology. It symbolized fertility, celebration, and energized much of the Romans' social life. The collection features three single-variety wines: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, each associated with a defining goddess.

  • Tellus & Merlot: A noble grape variety appreciated for its fruity character, roundness, and suppleness.
  • Salacie & Cabernet Sauvignon: Known for its firm tannic structure, rich, complex aromas, and aging potential.
  • Cybele & Malbec: Both adopted—Malbec by Bordeaux and Cybele by the Romans. Its intense black fruit aromas offer spicy and floral notes on the palate.

Historically, the goddesses influenced the climatic conditions that shaped the aromas and complexity of the various wines each year. Studio Boam sought to highlight the aromatic richness of Bordeaux red wines through a modern, offbeat, and educational visual composition.

The three illustrations, created from nuanced and balanced collages, are accompanied by texts placed alongside each deity. They emulate magazine cover design, setting them apart from most Bordeaux and French wine labels.
